Case study

Sabrina Basteiro

Retro personal portfolio

Personal portfolio for game developer Sabrina Basteiro, with a retro-pixel aesthetic built to experiment with art direction and animation.

Role

End-to-end frontend design and development for a client's personal portfolio.

The problem

The client, a game developer, needed her own portfolio to showcase her projects with a strong, distinctive visual identity.

Technical decisions

React 19 + Vite + TypeScript as the base, favoring short build times to iterate quickly on design.

Framer Motion to orchestrate each section's entrance animations, instead of plain CSS.

Retro palette and typography centralized in a single theme file, instead of repeated per component.

8-bit background theme song with a toggle button to turn it on or off, reinforcing the retro identity without forcing itself on the experience.

Challenges

Balancing a heavily stylized retro-pixel aesthetic with readability and contrast, without letting the visual identity work against usability.

Learnings

This was the project where I worked on art direction the most end to end, translating the client's desired visual style into a coherent design system.
